Most industrial processes yield low value waste streams.
These streams often contain potentially contain valuable components, such as proteins or carbohydrates, but the processes for efficient recovery of these products are lacking. Bioconversion, e.g. by the application of microorganisms or enzymes (biocatalysts), has attracted increasing attention as a possible means to decrease the environmental burden of industrial waste streams, and, moreover, to convert these to potentially valuable products.
A major problem in these processes is the concomitant loss of biocatalysts due to inactivation and flushing out. The loss of enzyme is often very costly and yields an uneconomical overall process. To overcome this inefficiency problem, biocatalysts can be bound to stable carriers to improve the recovery of the expensive biocatalysts.
In addition, such immobilized biocatalysts are often much more stable to harsh process conditions. As a result, economically sound and environmental friendly production of high-value products from(relatively) cheap materials is feasible. Within IMEnz Bioengineering BV ample experience is present with respect to the structural features that are involved in the inactivation of both soluble and immobilized biocatalysts.
IMEnz Bioengineering BV develops immobilized biocatalysts for application in the bioconversion of industrial waste streams. If desired and if feasible, (immobilized) microorganisms can be applied for such bioconversion processes. In addition, tailor-made biocatalysis/bioconversion processes will be developed in cooperation with customers.
