ResearchUser-friendly Small Molecule Detection Tools
The detection of low concentrations of small molecules and solutes in mixtures of complex nature is a serious problem. In particular, it is of utmost importance to quantify molecules that negatively affect the properties of biotechnological, chemical, pharmaceutical or conventional food/feed products. In addition, the on-line detection of particular products formed during a (bio-)industrial production method, is often hampered by the fact that no good, sensitive, procedures are available. For larger molecules, immunological methods can be applied, which in general yield satisfactory results.
However, small molecules, e.g. peptides and sugars, can not always be detected by antibody-based procedures, since the sensitivity of antibodies for small molecules is limited. HPLC techniques can be applied, but these have the disadvantage that, in particular when complex mixtures have to be analyzed, sample preparation is complicated and time-consuming.
IMEnz Bioengineering BV develops and produces novel small molecule detection devices. In addition, on-site service and trouble shooting assistance will be offered. Applications are foreseen in several (bio)industrial areas, including food and pharmaceutical industry. Furthermore, medical applications, e.g. detection of specific solutes in body fluids, are envisioned. Other possibilities are to study protein functionality. Specific applications will be developed in co-operation with industrial partners.
